Portoferraio

Portoferraio is the capital of the Island of Elba, and is the most populous and the island is the second largest after the town of Marciana. The foundation of the site, stands for the will of Cosimo I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, from which the city took its first name, "Cosmopoli". Beginning in 1548, was conceived as a military garrison in order to defend the coast of Grand and of the island. Initially the area was composed for the majority by a series of fortifications still visited and well-preserved, like the three Strengths: Strong Star, Fort Falcone and Linguella and beautiful walls, which we can still observe the remains, kept in good condition and made habitable.
